SUMMARY:Courtisane festival 2026: Compensation
DESCRIPTION:Courtisane festival is het festival voor film en audiovisuele kunsten. Het 25ste festival vindt plaats van 1-5 april 2026 in Gent. Op donderdag 2 april om 14u in KASKcinema vertonen we ‘Compensation’ (1999) van Zeinabu irene Davis\, met Engelse ondertiteling en nieuwe open captions.\n\nGeïnspireerd door het gelijknamige gedicht van Paul Laurence Dunbar\, verkent het langspeeldebuut van Zeinabu irene Davis taal\, migratie\, ziekte\, liefde en ritueel. Net als het gedicht belicht de film unieke Zwarte geschiedenissen\, culturen en kunstenaarschap. Compensation volgt twee koppels uit verschillende periodes: één aan het begin en één aan het einde van de 20ste eeuw — met hoofdrollen voor Michelle A. Banks en John Earl Jelks. Beide koppels worstelen met hun emoties\, met spanningen tussen Dove en horende werelden\, en met de tol die structureel racisme tijdens grote medische epidemieën eist van Zwarte levens. De film is gefilmd in helder zwart-wit en maakt gebruik van een rijke collage van historische foto’s\, een originele ragtime-soundtrack en tussentitels. Compensation roept zowel een gevoel van tragedie op als een hardnekkige hoop op leven\, die tot op vandaag stevig geworteld blijft in de harten van Zwarte Amerikanen.\n\nVoor deze digitale restauratie werden nieuwe open captions ontworpen en geïmplementeerd\, vormgegeven door Alison O’Daniel\, in samenwerking met het Compensation Caption Creative Team.\n\nVoor meer info en tickets: https://www.courtisane.be/nl/event/undercurrents-2-compensation

SUMMARY:Monstrous Bodies: Re-imagining representation - Margrit Shildrick
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of the Dag van de Filosofie\, tickets are available via www.dagvandefilosofie.be. Doors open at 13:30\, lecture starts at 13:45.\n\nMonsters and the monstrous have always evoked the contradictory responses of fascination and fear. The boundaries between the human and the monstrous are dangerously porous and how these boundaries are drawn works to define who we are and how we define the normal (body). A sense of ontological\, epistemological and ethical uncertainty and confusion that can resolve either in outright horror at the human inability to control a seemingly threatening materiality\, or in a move towards alternative and more hopeful modes of becoming.\n\nIt’s little exaggeration to say that the representation of the monstrous/the anomalously embodied/the strange leaks and flows across material\, political\, philosophical\, artistic and bioscientific imaginaries alike. The very excessiveness of corporeality that promises to productively transgress conventional expectations and boundaries can be both scholarly and fun\, and under conditions of promise can revalue what has been figured as the excluded other.\n\nFollowing the lecture\, Margrit Shildrick will engage in a conversation with Professor of Ethics and Moral Philosophy Seppe Segers. This afternoon is a collaboration between the Dag van de Filosofie\, Ghent University and Studium Generale Gent. \n\nThis lecture and aftertalk will be in English and will take place in the Zwarte Zaal of KASK. The Zwarte Zaal is located on the ground floor and is accessible to wheelchair users\, there’s also an accessible toilet in the hallway of KASKcafé. In case you use a wheelchair\, go via the entrance of KASKcinema instead of the Louis Pasteurlaan entrance. There are works in the street of KASKcinema\, but it’s possible to pass bu the entrance at Godshuizenlaan 4. A translation into Flemish sign language will be provided.
