Het vormde een aanleiding om na te denken over maakbaarheid\, heteronormativiteit in fitnesscultuur en de inherente rebellie van het dikke lichaam. Want is dik zijn en dik blijven geen daad van verzet in een wereld die ons vertelt dat we ons gewicht zelf in de hand hebben? \n\nFitness is doordrongen van een idee dat we in strijd leven met ons eigen lichaam. Wanneer je wint\, toon je je succes aan met de combinatie van een geslaagde voor- en na-foto. Maar wat als je in een lichaam leeft die een tijdlijn van punt A naar punt B verwerpt? Dan val je al gauw in een categorie mensen die om verschillende redenen strijden voor inclusie zoals de queer gemeenschap. Onverwachts leiden down-ups en deadlifts naar de affiniteit tussen queerness en het dikke lichaam. Na de lezing gaat Louise Souvagie in gesprek met activiste Philsan Osman. Dit evenement vindt plaats in het kader van het WACF-festival en is een samenwerking van Studium Generale en VIERNULVIER. \n\n• Louise Souvagie is schrijver en moderator. In 2019 behaalde ze een Master in vrije kunsten aan KASK & CONSERVATORIUM. Ze maakte de podcast ‘GALLERINAS’ en schreef voor Rekto:Verso en Extra Extra Magazine. De afgelopen jaren nam ze deel aan Nieuw Geluid (deBuren)\, de Week van de Kunstkritiek (Frans Masereel Centrum) en de Mediakaravaan (de lage landen). Ze doceert kunstbeschouwing aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven. \n\n• Philsan Osman is co-auteur van ‘Voor Wie Willen We Zorgen: Ecofeminisme als inspiratiebron’ (EPO 2021). Ze komt uit Somalië en is schrijver\, activist en community builder. \n\nDeze lezing zal plaatsvinden in de De Minardschouwburg – de zaal is makkelijk bereikbaar voor gebruikers van een rolstoel. Gelieve bij de aankoop van een ticket te vermelden dat je rolstoelgebruiker bent. Dan wordt er alvast een aparte plaats voor jou en je eventuele begeleider gereserveerd. Bij aankomst aan de schouwburg\, kan je via een zachte helling makkelijk de ticketbalie bereiken. Meld je daar aan\, en er wordt gezocht voor begeleiding door ons zaalpersoneel. Er wordt een schrijftolk voorzien. SUMMARY:Fatphobia as misogynoir: gender\, race and weight stigma - Sabrina Strings (met tolk VGT)

Paid tickets are available here: https://apps.ticketmatic.com/widgets/vooruit/flow/tickets?event=910804915596&l=nl#!/addtickets \n\nIn the West\, we commonly believe that the aversion to fatness is rooted in medical concerns\, especially given the purported “obesity epidemic.” However\, studies have shown that the aversion to fat bodies in the West precedes medical warnings about any presumed relationship between size and health. Further\, research has long-established that the group most likely to be denigrated for being fat is Black women. In this presentation\, Strings will show that contrary to popular beliefs\, fatphobia is not rooted in health concerns. Rather\, it arose as a mechanism to justify the booming enterprise of slavery through the degradation of Black people\, and Black women in particular\, as unrestrained in their “animal appetites.” Moreover\, when the medical establishment elected to take up questions regarding the relationship between fat and health in the 20th century\, physicians chose BMI as its proxy\, a tool mired in colour-blind racism. \n\nAfter the lecture\, Sabrina Strings will have a conversation with writer Philsan Osman. This event takes place in the framework of the WACF-festival and is a collaboration between Studium Generale and VIERNULVIER.\n\n• Sabrina Strings is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California\, Irvine. She previously held an appointment as a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology and the School of Public Health at the University of California\, Berkeley. \n\n• Philsan Osman is co-author of “For Whom We Want to Care: Ecofeminism as Inspiration” (EPA 2021). She is originally from Somalia and is a writer\, activist and community builder. \n\nThe lecture will take place in the theater hall at the Vooruit. There are works in progress at the Vooruit to improve accessibility. During the works\, the elevator in front of the theater hall will remain accessible. The auditorium is accessible to persons in wheelchairs\, accompanied by a VIERNULVIER staff member. Wheelchair seating is available in rows 1 and 17 of the parterre. There is an adapted restroom nearby. An interpreter will be present for this lecture to translate from English to Flemish sign language.
